Netflix has gone blu-ray only

The popular online video rental service Netflix has announced that they have decided to support Blu-ray exclusively for high definition movie rentals.

Netflix will no longer purchase movies in the rival HD DVD format, and once the life cycle for those discs has ended, they will no longer stock the format for rent.

Blu-ray vs Hd-dvd, sales chart

A well, one more week for Blu-ray on the winning streak and one more for Hd-dvd on the loosing streak and one more week with alot of people being fooled into buying a hd-dvd player.

I just read about a poor sod whom bought a hd-dvd player earlier this year to purchase HD movies for his kids, problem is, disny is blu-ray HD only... Makes you wonder when people will catch up to the ugly reality that is hd movies.

Anyway, he´s now buying a ps3 for christmas, first and foremost to use it as a blu-ray movie player and of course also to play games with his kids.

Data for the week shows 72.6% of high-definition discs purchased by consumers were Blu-ray and just 27.4% were HD DVD, which means hd dvd isnt gaining, they are loosing ground in the hd movie war.

Blu-ray vs Hd-dvd

The numbers speaks for itself.

week ended 4 Nov: Blu-ray 71% of movie sales and hd-dvd 29%.
Year to date: Blu-ray 64% hd-dvd 36%.

Link to nielsens numbers

The transformer boost aparently only lasted for a week for the hd-dvd camp, and not even that week had them outperforming blu-ray.

Now, take into account the new and more affordable ps3 40gig unit and realy, why would anyone go hd-dvd, not even xbox 360 users has a real incentive to pick up the hd-dvd ad on for their console, it´s pretty pricy and ad´s one more unit in front of their tv, so if you´re going to have two units anyway and you already have one x360, far better picking up the more then affordable 40 gig ps3 and use that for your hd movie pleasure, not that big of an difference in price compared to the hd-dvd adon for your x360 and it will allow you to enjoy blu-ray movies instead of just hd-dvd movies and blu-ray is the winning hd movie format.

Secondly, picking up a low priced ps3 gets you access to even more games and since both x360 and ps3 have some neat exclusives this year (think uncharted for ps3 and ratchet and clank and haze and warhawk first and foremost) well that is of course much better then picking up a hd dvd adon for your x360, as of now, hd-dvd is going down the drain, the outsold ratio is increasing, not decreasing, and every hd-dvd exclusive movie will sooner or later end up on blu-ray, as were disney and sony will never release their movies on hd-dvd.

Simple pick aint it? With the exception of some die hard x360 fanboys it would be fun hearing what you sane x360 owners thinks of this.

Oh and dont forget that your lovely ps3 already supports the holy blu-ray 2.0 features, except for the software of course, but unless you´r living in a void like some do, you already know that sony´s lovely ps3´s blu-ray player keeps getting updated firmware per firmware and what it can do today is far beyond what it could do at launch, and when it launched it was already one of the best blu-ray players.

In other words blu-ray 2.0 wont be far away for the playstation 3 which is something that cant be said for early stand alone blu-ray players.

Final verdict is that you just got to love being a ps3 owner as far as high definition entertainment goes (games, movies, music).

300.first hand impressions

Call it first hand impressions, a review or whatever, but we finaly purchased 300 on blu-ray and well, you know, my expectaions werent that big, seeing the review during it´s time on the big screen.

But still, i realy did enjoy every footage i did see from it and by the end of the day, a blu-ray movie aint that pricy, sure, it costs more then the dvd, but the money aint much to talk about, so i picked it up for an adult only night at home with my girlfriend.

And it for sure was a pleasant surprise, the image quality is just superb, best i´ve seen so far on blu-ray or anyother format, excellent sound and you know what, the story and narration was spot on.

And that´s comming from someone that doesnt realy enjoy shallow, skin only movies, but i didnt find that here, sure it´s realy violent, and the spartan society could by alot of people be viewed as a light pre wwII german one, but that´s the thing.

Even tho the movie is of course exagerated it still shows off how society was during that timeframe, so nothing weird with that, does it feel bad, yes.

Does it make your skin crawl, yes, but that´s how life was for alot of people and cultures, in the end 300 realy is a sight for sour eyes and the story is good, actors do their thing and with honor, the style and sound, the quality of the movie, it´s all top notch and well worth it´s price.

As for the blu-ray version, if you do have a nice hd tv at home and a phat blu-ray standalone player or that gorgeous playstation 3, do pick it up, if for nothing else, to atleast see how hd movie quality should be as of now.

To round it up.

300 get´s 9.3* out of 10 by me (which puts it one . ahead of gladiator if you´re wondering and slightly below braveheart)

HD war. two new players

A well, the stupidity leak continues, yeah, yeah competition is good, that´s for sure and it will atleast help drive down price of both blu-ray and hd-dvd but still, how can movie companies help supporting two new hd movie formats?

People will go crazy, and all it will do is slow down the high definition format acceptance, because a big pool of people wont purchase anything until there´s one last man standing up, which we all know will be blu-ray :).

But anyway, first as we already know china-dvd is on the horizon, a new hd format mainly for china... But it will of course cross boarders sooner or later.

Second of all, a french company will roll out HD-Vmd this year in Usa, central Europe, the nordic countires(including Sweden), Australia, Brazil, China and japan.

Lower price is the big catchphrase for both hd-vmd and china-dvd.

Hd movie war. blu-ray continues to pull ahead

Blu-ray is increasing it´s pace and widening the gap between itself and the hd.dvd camp, during Jan 1, 2007 and Jul 1, 2007 blu-ray sold more then twice as many movies as the microsoft empowered hd.dvd format.

Which is just how it should be, blu-ray is a far, far better medium and will provide you with superiour image and sound quality, well, atleast if the one´s producing the movies knows what they are doing, which isnt always the case, regardless of you buying your hd film on blu-ray or hd.dvd, alot of early releases were crappy standard definition releases no better then the dvd release or sometimes even worse.

But that has changed and alot of high quality releases has now made it´s way to blu-ray, the latest one being 300 which sold far, far better on blue-ray then hd.dvd.

Anyway, im sure that you also know that one of the best blu-ray players and weirdly enough by far the cheapest is the playstation 3 unit, so if you dont own one but you enjoy movies and have a hd tv, go out and pick up a playstation 3 right away.

Who knows you might end up playing high quality games on it aswell insted of just watching movies, because if we´re realy honest, virtualy every person out there, do enjoy a good game now and then, they just have to give up to that inner child of theirs :)

But if not, pick up a ps3 anyway and use it as a truly great media center capable of streaming movies and music, playing blu-ray and dvd(it has stellar dvd playback quality aswell) and all your mp3´s, and best of all, it´ll do it wireless.

so what´s been the best cinema experience so far

Well, so far into 2007, the best cinema experience so far has easily been die hard 4.0, such a great movie and no that´s not just my male reptile brain speaking up, my girlfriend felt the exact same thing, great movie and a very pleasant surprise since that wasnt what we had expected when watching it earlier this year on the big screen.

It´s a given the day it hits blu-ray, that´s for sure and by far the best die hard movie.

Runner ups so far into the year has to be the third pirates movie with sparrow and crew, great entertainment but not close to taking first place, but it´s also a fun experience and worthy third installment on that franchise and we simply put enjoyed that one alot aswell.

After those two movies, well im not sure so i´ll have to think about that but we hit the cinemas quite often and tend to watch the films we realy want to in the cinema, the ones we miss get´s a hdtv treatment and we usualy purchase em instead of rent or download, hey, it´s still cheaper then going two or four persons to the cinema for some big screen action so i think buying movies are pretty inexpensive, but we do restrict ourselves to movies that we know are good.

Not that i wouldnt mind them being even cheaper and same goes for the cinema.

a well, nr.uno so far into 2007 is die hard 4.0 but there´s been alot of realy good movies both on the cinema, dvd (blood diamond) and blu-ray (casino royale was by far the best bond and flags of our fathers were a sad but intruiging war movie)

hd.Universal stupidity leak

Well i frankly have no other word for it.
Aparently Universals President Craig Kornblau thinks that hd-dvd is on the brink of extinction and that if universal would go neutral and start releasing blu-ray movies that would kill of hd-dvd right away....

So he wants the format war to continue by not selling blu-ray content forcing the poor folks that do pick hd-dvd players to pay up for a format he doesnt even believe in himself, and he also said that by the end of the year Universal will perhaps decide to go blu-ray, which translates to, sure hd-dvd is losing but hey, the ones that pays for hd-dvd players until we start pushing blu-ray can always buy a new hd movie player next year.

I mean, it´s one thing if he atleast believed in his hd format, then it would atleast be justified to continue fightning even tho blu-ray is increasing it´s lead, just look at the recent 300 release, the blu-ray version is just plain smoking the hd-dvd version, but this guy doesnt even believe in hd-dvd winning, he just wants you to rebuy hard and software once universal has made their switch in 6 month, 12 month or whatever the date will be.

hd.300 sells a ton thanks to blue-ray

Noticed ps3fanboy writing a piece on 300 being the fastest selling hd movie ever, selling more then a quarter of million units in around a week.

And you know what, blue-ray stood for 65 percent of it´s sales while hd-dvd only mustered 35%, just as the fanboy himself i´ll have to say that the hd-dvd camp trying to make it look and sound like the ps3 doesnt affect blu-ray sales is looking more and more like a famous bird with it´s head stuck deep down in the sand, well he didnt say it like that, but i did, because it´s the truth :)

Anyway, it´s good for both consumers and sony and the ps3, and of course the entire blu-ray camp and it´s of course good for time warner and the 300 producer and pretty soon im sure that the last few hd-dvd only producers will give up and switch to producing blu-ray aswell.

hd movies.Paramount shifts focus to blu-ray

And that little topic would have continued like this, to blu-ray from hd dvd which previously more or less was favoured by paramount, but the tides have turned into waves and everyone seems to be shifting into high gear when it comes to blu-ray.

And so is paramount, which will now be releasing uncompressed, lossless sound with it´s feature blu-ray movies, and nope, the hd dvd versions wont get it due to a lack of filesize on the hddvd disc, which is great news for blu-ray owners since we already have the image quality(flags of our fathers, casino royale) and now, finaly sound has caught up with that.

Couple that with all the recent wins for blu-ray over hd dvd and things have realy started to roll for Sony and it´s combined hd video, hdsound and hd game assault named ps3.
